Summer Youth Camp 2015
“The youth is the hope of the nation.” –Dr. Jose P. Rizal
When we say business, we don’t just talk about numbers. We also talk about passion – the passion to fuel up our gas tanks and start up our engines to go the extra mile. The reason being, Philippines does not only rely to graduates – but to future graduates, the youth empowered to strive and work for the country’s progression.
That is the objective behind the recently-concluded Summer Youth Camp 2015 held in STI College Muñoz-EDSA last April 20-25, 2015 as one of the activities under our Teen Empowerment Workshops. 18 campers ages 9-16 joined the six-day stay-in camp where they learned various life-long skills encompassing critical thinking, communications, change adaptation, and character building.
How then, were these skills incorporated?
Different workshops were provided to inculcate to the campers how to show love for themselves, for their family, for their country, and for God. Different tasks were required of them to do for them to realize and find ways on how to cope with these changes outside the comfort of their homes. They built their characters and found their identities as they were provoked to think critically and communicate to express.
For six days, the campers stayed in the premises of STI Muñoz, ate God-made food, and lived a life like that in the real-world where they paid for their meals, bills, and violations as a family or community. They deviated from the digital world as gadgets were not allowed. They learned to get along and value relationships, particularly physical friendship. They played, talked, and smiled in person, not through the computer monitor or camera lens.
They realized how much work their parents need to put up with just so they could pay their bills, send them to school, and make ends meet. They worked and earned to pay for their needs. Different activities enhancing the mind, body, heart, soul and passion were enjoyed by the campers, as well as the community advisers coming from the faculty and staff of STI.
On the last day, parents were invited for the graduation ceremony. The parents and guardians were also lectured with some tips on how to cope with their children in the modern age. The parents, guardians, and campers all responded positively to the activities done all throughout the week.
It was indeed a “summer to remember” not just for the campers and their families, but also to the STI Muñoz community which went the extra mile in service to the Filipino Youth.
