By Erika M. Ilagan

Last August 8, our NSTP Department headed by the STI College – Muñoz EDSA NSTP/ Student Affairs Coordinator, Mr. Wilson Morano and our GE Coordinator, Mr. Ronnel Romero, in partnership with the Chairman on Agriculture of barangay Holy Spirit, Quezon City, Mr. David V. Balilla, organized an “Urban Farming Seminar” for NSTP2 students held at Barangay Holy Spirit Quezon City.

The objective of the said event is to create awareness among the students as to how to manage waste and live the urban life through recycling and urban farming. The topics discussed during the seminar were as follows:

  • Solid Waste
  • Waste Recycling
  • Importance of garbage
  • Creation of accessories and designs for hoses using recyclable materials
  • Urban Farming
  • Compost Pit
  • Sources of nitrogen, potassium and phosphorous

A total of 67 STI College – Muñoz EDSA NSTP2 students out of 101 were able to attend the said seminar. Despite the low number of attendees, the three-hour seminar was a success because of the knowledge that has been imparted to the students. Based on the feedback from the students, they did not just learn about and appreciate the importance of recycling in the preservation of our environment, but they also learned about the modern concept of composting and gardening called “Hydroponic Gardening”. With this, the students further realized that they could do something in the preservation of the environment even while living the urban life.
Following its success, Mr. Morano and Mr. Romero intends to bring the seminar to STI College – Muñoz EDSA to create awareness among all students, faculty and staff, especially to the maintenance staff. If it will be approved by the administration, we could have a community which is knowledgeable and able to help preserve our environment.
